Friday we all got back on the buses and were taken to the city of Cloppenburg where they have an old village set up. We were given a tour through the village and we learned about how the people lived 200 years ago here in Germany.
The farmers lived in their barns with the cattle. They slept in little cupboards to keep small creatures, like mice, away. They had no outhouses. In the warmer months they just went outside in the woods, but had to watch out for stinging nettle. During the winter they used the same stalls the cattle were in. YUCK!
Half way through the tour it started to rain. It doesn’t just sprinkle here it really comes down hard with thunder and lightning too. We all ran to the school house for shelter and learned about their school. When the rain was coming down a bit lighter, some of us walked over to the wind mill and saw how they would grind the wheat.
School is in.
Then we all got back in to the vans and drove to a large shipping yard on a river where they build cruise liners. It was cool to see how they build the ships in a dry dock and then add water to make them float. It takes about a year and a half to build one ship and then they can send them out into the river and out to sea.
The tour was very long and the girls got very bored. They just wanted to get back to Westerstede so that they could watch the boys team, (that visited us in the USA last year) play their soccer game. We did finally get back in time for the game but the boys lost 0 – 1. I think they were a little distracted by all the girls. After the game the girls all went to one family’s home for Mexican food, which they all said wasn’t too bad and the adults went another home for a Bar B Q.
